Android vs. Apple: The flyover states

Google phones may outsell iPhones in eight U.S. states. Can you guess which ones?

Here’s a bit of geographical trivia that may have business consequences.

According to a Myxer BoomBox Report released Friday morning, smartphones running Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system have closed the gap and may actually outsell Apple’s (AAPL) iPhones in eight states U.S. states.

Unfortunately for the manufacturers of Android phones, the states where they are selling best, according to this report, include some of the least-populated in the country.

They are, in alphabetical order:

• Arizona (2009 pop. 6.6 million)
• Maryland (5.7 million)
• Montana (974,000)
• Nebraska (1.8 million)
• New Mexico (2 million)
• North Dakota (647,000)
• South Dakota (813,000)
• Wyoming (544,000)

States where the difference is less than 10%, Myxer counts as swing states. They include Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, South Carolina and Virginia.

Why the geographical differences? It’s tempting to read into the BoomBox map some kind of anti-Apple resistance in the so-called flyover states. But we suspect it has more to do with the holes in AT&T’s (T) 3G coverage made famous by Verizon’s (VZ) “There’s a map for that” ads.

And take the whole thing with a grain of salt. Myxer bills itself as “a go-to consumer destination for mobile entertainment and personalization — with one of the world’s largest catalogs of ringtones, wallpapers, videos, applications and games.” There’s enough sample bias in that description to fill the wide open spaces of Wyoming.

makes for some interesting reading, yes the states might be the least populated but things are a changing. with the release of the Desire i would like to see some more of the green on that map. lets hope more android App development is on the cards.

HTC is about to release new and exciting high-end smartphones, HTC DESIRE that are intended to complement and eventually replace the latest proposals by the manufacturer. HTC Sense is an interface that puts the focus of individuals, allowing them to use the phone more easily and naturally.

The new HTC Sense experience continues to have as main objective as the improvement of interaction with people. The first step in this direction is a new application called HTC Friend Stream that can easily combine all the social networking services like Facebook, Twitter and Flickr into a single stream of updates. This aggregation makes it easier than ever to control what our friends are doing, their photos and links they share. In addition to Friend Stream, you can organize your contacts into specific groups, such as the Group of Friends, colleagues or any other group that can be useful for the user.

The battery should provide an autonomy of up to 390 minutes talk time and up to 360 hours of standby time. The capacity of battery is 1,400 mAh.

To complement its refined design, HTC Legend is equipped with a 3.2-inch AMOLED HVGA screen. Traditional trackball has been replaced by an optical joystick surrounded by a thin button which improves usability without compromising the unique design.

Feature-rich, with a sheet of all respect, the Desire exploits a mature Android operating system.

i cant wait for this phone to be released, my contract is up very soon and i know which phone im going to be getting next.

it looks great, im a huge fan of android and the HTC Sense looks stunning on the videos that i have seen of this video.
